Information we collect
When you place an order, we may collect your name, email, shipping and billing addresses, telephone number if provided, order details, and communications. When you sign up for updates or contact us, we collect information you choose to provide.
Our website and service providers may automatically collect device, browser, IP address, referral, usage and cookie information.
Our website is hosted on Squarespace. Squarespace sets cookies and similar technologies that are needed for the shopping cart, checkout, security, and site performance, and may provide us with basic site-traffic statistics. When you first visit, a cookie banner lets you accept all cookies, decline non-essential cookies, or manage your cookie preferences. Our email sign-up and contact forms are provided through Squarespace, and our sign-up form uses Google reCAPTCHA to help prevent spam; reCAPTCHA may collect device and usage information subject to Google's own privacy disclosures. We use USPS Click-N-Ship and Rollo to create shipping labels for orders. We do not currently use Google Analytics, the Meta (Facebook) Pixel, or other third-party advertising pixels on this website.
Payments are processed by Squarespace. We do not intend to store full payment-card numbers ourselves; the processor's practices are governed by its own privacy disclosures.
How we use information
We use information to process payments and orders, ship products, provide customer service, handle returns, prevent fraud, maintain and improve the website, meet legal obligations, and send marketing messages when permitted. You may unsubscribe from promotional emails using the link provided in those messages.
Sharing and service providers
We may share necessary information with Squarespace, payment processors, shipping carriers, email providers, analytics providers, professional advisers, and authorities where required. We do not describe personal information as "sold" without first evaluating actual advertising and analytics configurations and applicable state-law definitions.
Cookies and choices
We may use cookies and similar technologies for shopping-cart operation, security, preferences, and measurement. Browser controls may allow you to limit certain cookies, although some site functions may not work without essential cookies.
Children's privacy and mailed correspondence
Our approach to children's privacy
Higgeldy House, operated by Cedar Lane Holdings Group, LLC, values the privacy and safety of children and families. Our website provides information about children's books, author events, and related products. Website purchases, mailing-list subscriptions, and online communications are intended to be handled by adults, including parents, guardians, and educators.
We do not knowingly solicit personal information directly from children under 13 through our website. If we learn that personal information was collected online from a child under 13 without any required parental consent, we will take appropriate steps to address the collection and delete the information as required by applicable law.
Letters, drawings, and mailed submissions
Higgeldy House welcomes letters, drawings, and other creative correspondence sent through postal mail. Parents and legal guardians are encouraged to review children's submissions before mailing them. Submissions should not include unnecessary personal information such as a child's full name, school, telephone number, birth date, or other sensitive identifying details.
We may use information included in mailed correspondence to review submissions, respond to letters, and maintain records reasonably necessary for those purposes.
Responses to children's correspondence
When a child or family sends correspondence to Higgeldy House, we may use the provided mailing address to send a personal response. We do not use mailing addresses obtained through children's correspondence for advertising, promotional mailing lists, or unrelated marketing without appropriate authorization.
Social media and public sharing
Higgeldy House may occasionally wish to share reader-submitted artwork, letters, or creative materials through its official social media accounts, including Instagram. Before publicly sharing a child's submission, we will seek documented permission from the child's parent or legal guardian, whether or not the submission identifies the child. Mailing a submission does not automatically grant permission for public display or promotional use.
We generally avoid publishing children's full names, home addresses, school information, or other unnecessary identifying details. Parents or guardians may contact us to request that we discontinue future use or remove a previously published post from accounts under our control, subject to applicable limitations.
Retention and disposal of mailed submissions
Higgeldy House may retain selected letters, drawings, and other creative submissions as keepsakes or for archival purposes associated with the author's correspondence and creative work. We seek to limit retention of children's identifying information to what is reasonably necessary for responding, maintaining appropriate records, and carrying out authorized uses.
Where practicable, mailing addresses and other identifying information may be separated from retained artwork or correspondence once no longer needed. Materials and associated personal information will be stored with reasonable safeguards and reviewed for continued retention. Information no longer reasonably necessary for an identified purpose will be securely disposed of or deleted, subject to applicable legal obligations. No fixed 12-month retention period applies to selected keepsakes.
Parental questions and requests
Parents or legal guardians may contact us with questions about their child's mailed correspondence or to request access to, correction of, or deletion of associated personal information. We may take reasonable steps to verify the requesting adult's authority before responding to requests involving a child's personal information. Contact: Higgeldy House, Cedar Lane Holdings Group, LLC, P.O. Box 44, Chesterland, OH 44026; jessica@higgeldyhouse.com.
Retention and security
We keep information for as long as reasonably necessary for orders, customer support, recordkeeping, legal obligations, and legitimate business needs. We use reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect information, but no system is completely secure.
Your choices and privacy requests
You may contact us to request access, correction, deletion, or information about our practices. We will respond as required by applicable law; certain records may need to be retained for legal or transactional purposes.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy as practices change. The updated version will be posted with a revised effective date. Questions: jessica@higgeldyhouse.com or P.O. Box 44, Chesterland, OH 44026.
